THE SCAN: Evaluation of a Patient-Centred Multimedia Application

This mobile Application was developed in collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Cardiology at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. The application intends to improve patient attitudes towards myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). Utilising the psychoeducational benefit of narrative to familiarise patients with pre-appointment preparation for Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

During 3 months of clinical observation I witnessed the compassionate, service of the Advanced Technologist team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary NHSGGC. Through life drawings and gesture based sketches, I captured realistic depictions of the patient experience for the purposes of multimedia patient centred education.

Patients attending Nuclear Cardiology departments for myocardial perfusion imaging may arrive with negative mental models of their anticipated appointment experience. These cognitive representations are informed by individual perception, subjective emotional states and pre-appointment information.

Leaflets are the standard method of pre-appointment information delivery for NHS patients, however Patients with suspected CAD often struggle with existential uncertainties and concerns that cannot be served by information alone.
